THE LIGHT IN THE FOREST

The Light in the Forest, By Conrad Richter, 1953. A white boy raised as an Indian. Then had to return to the white people in the mid 1700‘s. Even though True Son had to live as a white person he was an Indian at heart. You can’t always do what you want to do.

This story was the differences between the free world of the Indians and the restricting of the whites. The Indians roam the land freely and eat what nature provides while the whites live a strict following world by creating settlements and setting up industries.

True Son was his Indian name. True son was captured by the Native American tribe when he was only 4 years old. He was raised by a Indian named Cuyloga and the tribe name was Lenni Lenape Tribe. He lived as a real Indian and his tribe thought of him as a true Indian to replace a son that Cuyloga had lost.

True Son found out that he had to go back to his white family when he was fifteen years old as the soldiers were negotiating with the Indians. Cuyloga didn’t want to give up the boy but he had to and hated the though of the enemy coming near as they took back what they thought was theirs. True Son, his white name John, learned that he was born in Pennsylvania and his family was waiting for him.

He had a very difficult time adjusting to his new life. He felt like a prisoner in the house. All he could think of was what he learned growing up in the Indian life that whites were very violent. He felt that way when he met his Uncle Wilse who made it known that he didn’t trust or like him being there. He would argue with his uncle all the time.

True Son got real sick and the Minister said it was called the unknown fever that Indians got. When he was sick there was talk about two Indians in town looking for True Son. The towns people sent them to his uncle’s place, knowing that he hated the Indians and would take care of them. He did claim the life of one and the other one escaped. He found True Son and True Son was happy to see his cousin Half Arrow. Half Arrow told him about what his uncle did to Little Crane, they scalped him. They went to his uncles to get revenge that’s when True Son was feeling his mixed emotions. Half Arrow wanted to cut his heart out and when they started to scalped him they were interrupted by a hired hand so it didn’t happen. He was very confused at this point because he was told that the whites never hurt the children and he just learned that was not true.

I learned that the life styles of the Indians and Americans are very different. True Son learned that his Indian Family was not always right, and neither were the Americans. But he learned the hard way that your heart will lead you in the right direction to decisions that are hard to make.

Plymouth Essay

Plymouth Essay

The founding of English colonies in modern Massachusetts combined a strange mix of idealism and violence. Miles Standish contributed important protection to the early colonies by using violence. Benjamin Church provided vital leadership to protect the colonies during King Philip's War.Despite all of this violence, the colonies were also founded on religious idealism. It is important to understand the full history of these areas because this is what Americans generally consider to be our nation's beginning.

Wounded Knee

Wounded Knee illustrates one of the final events in a long series of violent conflicts motivated by racism, disrespect and lack of understanding. The first video is a about the battle at Wounded Knee. The second video is about the monument. The porgary is about have they was dog poop on the gave.

The Indians surrendered, showed the white flag, but the 7th Calvary were ready to fight. They took all of their weapons and kitchen supplies away from them, and even though they were unarmed and surrendered, they shot and killed the men. They told the women and children and any others that were hiding that it was safe to come out, but they shot them anyway. This action showed that the white people did not respect or understand the Indians way of life.

Also, in the video about the monument the white people left dog poop on the graves of the dead Indians. Many Indians were left just laying on the ground. The white people did not show any respect for them. I feel that it was terrible what happened to the Indians and that people should try to work out problems peacefully.

Book Report #2

AIR RAID – PEARL HARBOR

On November 1, 1941 the last Japanese boat called Taiyo Maro was able to land in Honolulu harbor as American and Japan had broken off trade relations. The FBI was there this day to double check passports and luggage as Americans thought that they might have spies go to the inland. They didn’t see anything out of order as the FBI left the pier there was four Japanese that let out a deep sigh of relief as they were japans navy spies that had posed as waiters, and bed makers. The four Japanese were under the order of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. They needed to report back to him airtraffice and fisherman boat traffic. As they were planning there route to attack the naval base in Pearl Harbor. They also had a spy named Kita that had been there taking pictures, names and routines that he handed over to them on the ship.

In Washington DC they had a machine called Purple that was a code breaker of communication of the Japanese. The US knew that Japan was planning a war that was going to be worse then what they did to China. President Franklin Roosevelt and his crew knew what was going on but they didn’t inform anyone including Admiral Husband Kimmel, in Hawaii. Many people didn’t realize that Japan had new aircrafts and better pilots. The Americans shut off Japan from everything oil, steel, raw goods. This happened on November 2, 1941. But Japan made treaties with Germany and Italy. Demands started between US and Japan, but they would not agree with each other. Thirty days before the attack President Roosevelt asked for an update and Secretary of state Cordell Hull said it was serious that Japan might attack anytime. They thought Japan would hit the Philippines or Malaya Bases not Pearl Harbor as it was to far away.

Pearl Harbor had aircraft carriers, cruises, destroyers and submarines. But the Navy suffered from lack of funds, old equipment and under trained people. The Admirals of Pearl Harbor Manila and Philippines were sent a message from the government that aid changes of negotiations very doubtful. That they think a surprise attack would be made towards Manila or Philippines. The Japanese have sent out submarines and cruisers making radio communications of wrong locations so they could confuse the US. Japans spy Yoshikawa was very busy telling them what US ships had left and what was in the Pearl Harbor Port.

On Friday, December 5th Washington heard on the Purple that Japanese instructed that the Japanese embassy should leave any American soil as soon as they could. Yoshilawa had one good look at Pearl Harbor to report what vessels were in or out of port. There were many telegraphs sent but never received or sent on time so the US was behind in communications. The first shot fired at 6:45 am on a submarine was a strong message of attack in the sea area, even planes were seen on radar but all ignored by the American people.

Complete surprise of attack had been achieved by the Japanese. They started bombing the different airfields and still Americans thought the navy was practicing even if it was Sunday a day of rest. Finally they realized they were under attack. They hit more then just Pearl Harbor. They blew up 33 planes at Ewe Marine Naval Base and were also going to attack at Hickam Field, Bellows and Kaneone. The ships parked at Pearl Harbor and hit was the Oklahoma, Arizona, California and the West Virginia. More then 400 men died on the Oklahoma and over 1000 on the Arizona. A short lull came. It gave the men a chance to get their guns and ammo ready for the return of the enemy. As they returned this time they started to shot back. In the end the Japanese had 324 planes return, they only lost 29 planes with 55 people killed. Pearl Harbor and the surrounding islands lost a total 2,403 people and more then 1,178 injured people.

The United States entered into World War II.
