Book Report #2

AIR RAID – PEARL HARBOR

On November 1, 1941 the last Japanese boat called Taiyo Maro was able to land in Honolulu harbor as American and Japan had broken off trade relations. The FBI was there this day to double check passports and luggage as Americans thought that they might have spies go to the inland. They didn’t see anything out of order as the FBI left the pier there was four Japanese that let out a deep sigh of relief as they were japans navy spies that had posed as waiters, and bed makers. The four Japanese were under the order of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. They needed to report back to him airtraffice and fisherman boat traffic. As they were planning there route to attack the naval base in Pearl Harbor. They also had a spy named Kita that had been there taking pictures, names and routines that he handed over to them on the ship.

In Washington DC they had a machine called Purple that was a code breaker of communication of the Japanese. The US knew that Japan was planning a war that was going to be worse then what they did to China. President Franklin Roosevelt and his crew knew what was going on but they didn’t inform anyone including Admiral Husband Kimmel, in Hawaii. Many people didn’t realize that Japan had new aircrafts and better pilots. The Americans shut off Japan from everything oil, steel, raw goods. This happened on November 2, 1941. But Japan made treaties with Germany and Italy. Demands started between US and Japan, but they would not agree with each other. Thirty days before the attack President Roosevelt asked for an update and Secretary of state Cordell Hull said it was serious that Japan might attack anytime. They thought Japan would hit the Philippines or Malaya Bases not Pearl Harbor as it was to far away.

Pearl Harbor had aircraft carriers, cruises, destroyers and submarines. But the Navy suffered from lack of funds, old equipment and under trained people. The Admirals of Pearl Harbor Manila and Philippines were sent a message from the government that aid changes of negotiations very doubtful. That they think a surprise attack would be made towards Manila or Philippines. The Japanese have sent out submarines and cruisers making radio communications of wrong locations so they could confuse the US. Japans spy Yoshikawa was very busy telling them what US ships had left and what was in the Pearl Harbor Port.

On Friday, December 5th Washington heard on the Purple that Japanese instructed that the Japanese embassy should leave any American soil as soon as they could. Yoshilawa had one good look at Pearl Harbor to report what vessels were in or out of port. There were many telegraphs sent but never received or sent on time so the US was behind in communications. The first shot fired at 6:45 am on a submarine was a strong message of attack in the sea area, even planes were seen on radar but all ignored by the American people.

Complete surprise of attack had been achieved by the Japanese. They started bombing the different airfields and still Americans thought the navy was practicing even if it was Sunday a day of rest. Finally they realized they were under attack. They hit more then just Pearl Harbor. They blew up 33 planes at Ewe Marine Naval Base and were also going to attack at Hickam Field, Bellows and Kaneone. The ships parked at Pearl Harbor and hit was the Oklahoma, Arizona, California and the West Virginia. More then 400 men died on the Oklahoma and over 1000 on the Arizona. A short lull came. It gave the men a chance to get their guns and ammo ready for the return of the enemy. As they returned this time they started to shot back. In the end the Japanese had 324 planes return, they only lost 29 planes with 55 people killed. Pearl Harbor and the surrounding islands lost a total 2,403 people and more then 1,178 injured people.

The United States entered into World War II.

local history project

On April Fool's Day in 1987 there was a flood in Maine. It rained very hard then and warmed up melting the snow and ice . According to Dianan Bowley, of Bangor Daily News the rivers rose more than 20 feet in less than 19 hours. Governor McKernan declared a "State of Emergency", which allowed the Maine National Guard to help people who were affected. The best thing about the flood was that nobody died.

There was more than $100 million in damage in Maine. More than 2,100 homes were flooded. More than 215 homes were destroyed and 240 had major damage. Over 400 businsses were affected.

The two rivers that flooded the most were the Kennebec River and the Piscataquis River. Some communities had more than eight feet of water in their downtown areas. Other rivers flooded also, including the Sebasticook River that flows through Hartland. The river in Hartland rose and came close to destroying the Irving Tannery. Most people were without power and could not leave their homes because the roads were flooded or washed away. Some people had to be evacuated, but many did not want to leave their homes. They had to be convinced that they would be hurt if they did not leave.

The questions 1 What occurred when the flood hit? 2 How did the flood affect the town? 3 Did the flood have any kind of impact on you and your family?

Interview Peggy Morgan, Hartland Town Manger
1 What occurred when the flood hit? Some on the lake left there homes and went to relatives to stay until the water reseeded. The bog in the Pine Grove cemetry filled all the way to the back of hime on Canaan Road. 60 people were were evacuated from the water street, Noth Street and Commercial Street area and Town hall was set up with cots for these people. They were not allowed back into their himes until the water reseeded. For 3 days we had employees on 24 hours per day.

2 How did the flood affect the town? The dam broke. It was haning under the mill Street Bridge and a hole gullied all the way across the bridge and main steet. The floor ind the old fire station cracked. The pump stion at the treatment Plant and all the electrical wiring and pumps flooded. Many roads flooded, The Tannery flooded.

3 Did the flood have any kind of impact on you and your family? No. Only I was went and cold for 3 days.

Katherine Ramsdell , Hartland Public works
1 What occurred when the flood hit? When it was declaired a flood, a lot of families had to be evacuated from Water St. and Commerical St. and placed somewhere else The pulic work crew worked along with the departments in the evacuation. Water St. was completetly under water for many days. There was one garage that got moved some due to the high water, also aome were damaged.

2 How did the flood affect the town? The villagea was almost block off due to main St. bride being damaged from the flod, a portion of the roadway was washed away. Alsothe fie dept, flod was damaged due to the high water. The river was as high as the road it self so the floor took a beating.

3 Did the flood have any kind of impact on you and your family? The only impact was all the late hours we had to put in watching the river to make sure everyone got out safe. Alot off cold wet hours. We went a lot of flas light batteries that time.

Judy Turner, Hartland Resident

1 What occured when the flood hit? FEAR! People were rushing around to stores for food and supplies. They were nervous not knowing what to expect from the storm and it's flooding. Curious people went to the villiage to see the water levels. Amazing amount of water. Fear of the rumor that our dam may not hold up.

2 How did the flood effect the town? Hartland was divided, you were on one side of town you could not get to the other side. You couldn't even go out Pittsfield Ave. to go around to Palmyra and come in from rte 151. Roads were flooded by Ford Hill Road and then the bridge on route 2 was also being watched because of high water there.

3 Did the flood have any kind of impact on you and your family? Yes. Could not get to work in Newport because of the flooding. Could not get in touch with family members. Phones were either down or phone lines were over loaded.

Joyce Halford - Town Clerk - Hartland Resident
1 What occured when the flood hit? Rained for several days had been cold so a lot of ice formed on the rivers and ponds. Alot of water was moving down from ponds as the water was rising and the ice broke up causing it to jam and it flowed toward the upper dam, the dam couldn't hold it back and it broke causing the water to flow over the bridge and flood Water Street.

2 How did the flood effect the town? People on Water Street were evacuated as the water flooded all their homes. Some people thought a few houses might be washed away. You couldn't get from the west side of town to east side as the water had come over the bridge on Main Street causing some damage. They were worried at that time that the fire station was going to break from the foundation. Homes on Commercial Street were also damaged. Couldn't get to Pittsfield or Newport from the west side of town as roads were flooded. People had to go the other way which was also pretty bad and some times not passable.

3 Did the flood have any kind of impact on you and your family? We lived on the higher part of town, however the rain had been so severe that cellars were flooded. My daughter and husband working in Pittsfield had hard time getting home. She bought the last sump pump at a hardware store in Pittsfield so there cellar could be pumped out when they got home to save there furance and hot water tank.

More than 100 roads and bridges were closed during the flood. The Fairbanks Bridge, Route 149 bridge, and the Low's Covered Bridge were destroyed. Those roads were closed for many months or years after the flood.

test 2

The Columbian Exchange transformed the world in a more radical(drastic) way than any other development in world history. One significant effect of this process was the establishment of the Triangle Trade. While many factors were a part of the Triangle Trade, the rapid growth in both supply and demand for new commodities was the largest motivating element. This time period may be best associated (to connect or bring into relation, as thought, feeling, memory, etc.: Many people associate dark clouds with depression and gloom. with economic developments, but it is impossible to analyze (to examine carefully and in detail so as to identify causes, key factors, possible results, etc) this period without considering the intense social impact that the Triangle Trade had on those involved. In truth, a full understanding can only be gained by appreciating(to raise in value. ) how economic and social factors(One that actively contributes to an accomplishment, result, or process) impact each other in history.

The Columbian Exchange changed the world in a more drastic way than any other development in world history. One important effect of this series of changes was the beginning of the Triangle Trade. While many things were a part of triangle trade, the fast growth in both supply and demand for new products was the biggest reason. This time peniod may be best connected with economic developments, but it is impossible to look at this period carefully without thinking about the serious results to the people caused by the Triangle Trade. We can understand only if we learn about how economic and social issues affect people in history.

The Pullman Strike and the Labor Movement In American History

George Pullman he was born and raised in Portland, New York. He was a cabinet maker but had bigger dreams. In 1825 they needed contractors to move sheds and houses so they could widen the Erie Canal. George Pull man hired a strong crew and this came his first profession and prompt him to move to Chicago. Chicago was a factory and shipping town.
George Pullman had to travel often with his job. The overnight trains were very uncomfortable. On one trip Pullman came up with an idea of building a train car with seats that converted into beds for a more comfortable ride. In 1858 Pullman bought two passenger cars. Putting his cabinet making experience to work, he designed and patented his bed-converting device. The railroad companies showed little interest in his cars. With this he then decided that the beds weren’t the only thing wrong with the cars. So he built from scratch a new passenger car bigger and better then any of them out there and called it the “Pioneer”. His break came in 1865 when President Arbram Lincoln was assassin. His body had to go from Springfield, IL to Washington, DC and his family choose the Pullman’s Pioneer.

Pullman would not sell his cars to the railroads he would only lease them. With the money he was making Pullman bought 3,000 acres, eleven miles south of Chicago. He built a factory and hired fifteen hundred laborers. He also built a hotel, offices and hundreds of houses. It was called Pullman, Illinois. He built a village for just his worker out side of town so the tourist could not see the workers. The houses in town were beautiful but the village for his workers was not.

In the late 1800 unions were formed and trouble started with a lot of large compies including Pullmans. A man named Eugene Debs was a union officer. Mr. Debs wanted to organize all railroad workers into a single union. In 1893 he organized the “American Railway Union”.
Trouble begin in Pullman city. When his workers were encouraged to join the union. As word was getting out that Pullman was charging his employees to much for housing and utilities.
The depression caused a decrease in sleeping cars which lead to Pullman decreasing the factory workers by 25%. He then cut the wages but did not reduce there rent or expenses. Worker were only getting paychecks for .07 cents after rent was taken out. Around 1893 things got even worse. More people were laid off and wages cut again. In 1894 the workers formed a committee to try to talk to Mr. Pullman. But Pullman would not listen to them. Mr. Debs said a walk-out or strike would make him make him listen. They walked out on May 11, 1894 at 10:30 a.m. The nation seemed to favor them due to the village that the world was seeing for the first time.
Jane Addams was a important person. She was a person between the rich and poor communities. The poor people respected her for trying to help them. She tried to make peace between Pullman and his workers but Ms. Addams got very upset with Mr. Pullman because he had no reactions to the staving children and adults and wouldn’t listen to her.
The walk-out of Pullman’s workers went into a nation wide boycott. Over 150,000 workers across the nation walked out which included fireman, brakemen, engineers and labors. The Paper head lines were “Not a Wheel turns in the West”. The federal government got involved because no mail was being delivered so the US General called in U.S. Army. No one could stop a mail train so Pullman attached his cars to the mail cars. Fourth of July is a time of celebration but it was the first day of blood when shots were fired.

People believed the Pullman strike was a tragic defeat for the American labor movements. When it was over, really nothing changed. Same wages, rent and the workers had to sign papers that they wouldn’t join a union to go back to work for Pullman. Mr. Debs had to serve six months in jail for delaying the mail as they blame the union leader for this strike. Jane Addams won the Noble Peace Prize for all the good she did. George Pullman died in 1897, three years after the strike. Pullman family was afraid that angry workers would dig him up so his funeral was held in private at night. His grave was much bigger and concrete was poured over it. Mr. Robert Judd took over the Pullman’s business which was the son of Abraham Lincoln. The business continued for a long time.
